Now with 10% More Shrug Content!

100_1386

I hit the 10% mark on the Koigu Shrug...since it takes 10 skeins, and I've knit up one...well, you do the math!  This is quite the addicting knit, and easy...but not boring... is that an oxymoron?

In more lace knitting news, I just got the kit for this:

Mariposa

Mariposa Shawl from Southwest Trading Co.  I got the pattern from my LYS and the Bamboo yarn from the boys at Threadbear.   The closure of this shawl really intrigues me...I have an issue with shawls staying on, so this should solve the problem.  I will be knitting it with Bamboo in Coffee:

My copy of Interweave Knits arrived today (do we call it "Interweave" anymore?  Or is it just "Knits"??),  Kate Gilbert's cover design is superfantastic...congrats Kate (and congrats on finding out you're with girl!)!  The other things I like are the Weekend Getaway Satchel (although I'll never make it because I HATE intarsia), the Blissful Jacket (Quick, look! Debbie Bliss designed something over 40" large!), and the Fair Isle Hoodie and Cardi (ok, mostly because Annie Modesitt's kids are too cute!).  The two things I most likely will knit is are the  Canteen Bag and the Cabled Shrug:

I know that Jessica thinks the sleeves are too big...but I'm thinking on someone with a bigger frame (moi) it wouldn't so ginormous.  Besides...I need more shrugs...my office is artic!   I have to put my lunch in the fridge to keep it from freezing!  Send warmth my way!

I mean. Really.

An open letter to Rick et al. at Knitter's Magazine,

I am a subscriber to your magazine.  For some reason I have this sense of loyalty to you.  Maybe it's because I live in Minnesota, and your are published out of South Dakota.  You know...Midwestern love and all.  But lately (ok, for like, the past year and a half) I have noticed that your designs have been really.....mmmm...not good.  Kudos to your designers for being creative, I do appreciate that, but you have to take into account that people want to wear the patterns that your are printing...and come on, would any self respecting person wear that tangle of novelty yarn pictured above?  You need to do some investigating and find out who your target demographic is...because I can tell you it's not me, nor most of the knitters I know.  I suggest you take a tour around the knitting "Blogosphere" (CNN's term, not mine) and take a good look at the things we are knitting.  Generally speaking, we knit bloggers (who, I'd like to think are setting the trends for the knitting industry) are knitting CLASSIC, ELEGANT, and FLATTERING garments.   We save novelty yarn for scarves, and have acknowledged that, as the Monolo has said, the fashion mania for the poncho, it is now over.  You can be funky, creative, and wild (see Teva Durham for an example) without being too much.   Maybe you need to enlist the skills of some new and fresh designers or something.  Think about it...

Oh, and while I have your attention, how fair is it that your book reviewer, Lynda Cyr, reviews your own XRX books?  She gave SnB Nation an iffy review, but Ponchos and Wraps received a stellar review? I mean.  Really.

Best Regards,

Caryn, aka the Fuzzy Noodle

Knitter's Review

Hello and happy Wednesday!  Not too much knitting done in the past few days due to Valentine's Day on Monday and Beer:30 yesterday (Beer:30-When you and your co-workers hit the bar for Happy Hour right after work...normally occurring at 5:30 pm.  "What time is it?"  "Beer:30!").  I am almost done with the raglan shaping on the back of Banff.  My plan is to finish the back tonight and hopefully get all the ribbing done on the front.  Tomorrow night I teach night 2 of Socks on Circ's at the LYS, which is having a HUGE sale running Thurs. through Sun.  I can't wait!

The Spring issue of Knitter's arrived in my mail box on Monday, and I have to say and I'm not utterly disappointed with the issue as I normally am with Knitter's (that's a complement)!  You see, I have a love hate relationship with this magazine...I love the fact that they are a "local" mag (out of S.D., a neighbor of MN), and I love that they really try to be "out of the box" with their designs.  I hate the fact that most of their garment designs use novelty yarn (only good for scarves, IMHO), and I hate the fact that, umm, most of the designs are fugly.  So, that said, the Spring issue actually has about 4-5 designs I would actually make!!! Surprise, wow!!  In fact, I will be making this one:

Snapit

"Snap It" uses Plymouth Fantasy Naturale yarn, a 100% worsted cotton that I (surprise!) happen to have in my stash!  A couple years back, I bought a bag (10 skeins) of F. N. in white on mega-ultra sale, and it has been sitting in my closet waiting to be knit up.  Yay for "shopping" for yarn in my own stash!!

Other things I would knit up: Hjalte by Elizabeth Lavold (I like most everything she designs...I've also met her); Blue Ridge Jacket (I like the band at the bottom a lot...this would be something good to wear to work);Green Tea Jacket (Oh, that's why I like it...it's designed by Knitty regular, Natalie Wilson); and I'm oddly drawn to Retro Brights , although I'm not sure I'd wear it, but I do like the colors!  Note: all of these patterns use natural fibers, that's partly why I like them!!!  Knitter's: HINT HINT!  Of course, there are the required fugly ponchos like this, this and this, but it wouldn't be Knitter's without them, right? :)

I might not be posting much this week, I'm kinda starting a new job.  Here's the scoop (if you care).  For the past year and a half, I have been working as a "Real Estate Assistant" (my official title being "Client Services Manager") for a team of 5 agents.  My job entails all the property and team marketing, advertising, client communications, paperwork, tech support, Starbuck's runner, lunch getter, etc.  The team lead, my boss, was promoted to Vice President of another office back in October, while I was getting my license.  Well, 60% of my job was talking care of him...making sure he knew where he was going on a daily basis, scheduling his calendar,  buying gifts for his wife, de-linting his jackets, etc. (I really enjoyed it actually, we became like brother and sister).   Now that he's a VP, that part of my job is gone, and I only really need to work for my team half time (he did most of the volume).  So, my boss connected me with an agent out of his new branch who REALLY needs my help.  Bad.  She's an awesome gal, she only markets luxury homes, had 4 kids, is married to a NHL hockey player, has written a book, writes a weekly newspaper column, and is developing a TV show to run locally.  She is Super Women...she does it all, and she REALLY NEEDS a good assistant.  Enter moi.  I'll probably be working full-time with her for the next two weeks (getting her and her office on track), then I'll go 50% with her, and 50% with the current team I'm with.  Is it bad that I pride myself in being the best real estate assistant in MN?  I had loftier dreams for myself (US President, US Senator, Lawyer, News Producer), but I really do enjoy my job and taking care of these people, and kind of being "behind the scenes".  It's funny realizing what we thought would make us happy, and what actually does!

"My Dominion is Also My Domain"*

I'm www.fuzzynoodleknits.com now!  No more having to remember the http://, or the .typepad.com.  I'm a plain, old dot com now, whoopie!

(*2 skeins of Koigu KPPM to the first person who e-mails me where the quote comes from!  Hint: it is from a TV show currently running on TV).

I got the new issue of Vogue Knitting today, and it is amazing how this magazine can annoy and delight me at the same time!  The big beef I have with them is that they are slowly moving away from offering larger sizes (46" and up).  They also did this to Koigu:

Koigupants

The horror.  These  must be the most expensive knit pants in the world, because the pattern calls for 17 skeins.  Yeah, like I'm going to spend $170 + on yarn for pants that are going to get me weird looks and give me a wedgie.

So, those are the con's...the pros are cute Chanel knock-off jackets, some neat fair isle designs, and this awesome bag:

Vkw04bag3

Dang...I gots to make me one of those!!  The only other thing I'd make from the issue is this Hoodie.  It looks comfy, plus I have Brown Sheep Burly Spun in my stash leftover from a failed sweater.  That's been my mantra lately...knit projects using yarn in my stash.  I also want to make this and this, both using yarn I already had, but abandoned for some reason or another.  So, my "Next on the Needles" list grows, but that's ok!  It's nice to dream!
